Véronique Martins Cabral
a French first name and Portuguese surnames. My last name derives from the fact that I was born of parents whose ancestors were enslaved and owned by someone else and also ancestors who were the owners. My first name comes from a Bible a ‘holy book’ of a religion that was used as a tool to oppress and enslave those same ancestors in every imaginable way. This name linked to my person will never allow me to forget what came before me. I am living proof of the horrors that happened and changed our world. The influence of slavery, colonialism, the distribution of Africa and its people, the systematic destruction of people, cultures and histories, the maintenance systems and wars to this day in order to avoid Africa’s evolution.
I am a physical manifestation of the effects of colonialism.
